Matheny Sears values diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We foster a culture of cooperation and collaboration because we believe diversity is important not only in our law firm but at the counsel table in the courtroom. We pride ourselves on retaining an array of persons of different races, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds.

We strive to support diversity among our attorneys and staff members to cultivate a team with different viewpoints and life experiences to support our clients and litigate in a diverse world. Our managing partner, Matthew Jaime, leads our firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Team. Mr. Jaime is of Hispanic descent, and he started his career as a law clerk with the firm over 35 years ago.

Our Diversity Team continues to make great efforts to develop mentorship and diversity initiatives, aiming to exceed our commitment to diversity at the firm. These efforts include working with local minority and women’s bar associations when seeking out employment of new attorneys. We also sponsor events from those organizations and encourage everyone at the firm and in the local legal community to participate.

We also seek to cultivate and support the depth of diverse viewpoints and experiences in the next generation. Our firm has proudly partnered with the Cristo Rey Network since 2007. This network of high schools delivers a career focused, college preparatory education for underprivileged, often minority, teens attending inner-city high schools.  Our firm supports the program and these students in hiring and mentoring students while they simultaneously complete high school and develop work experience. We also sponsor the Cristo Rey Network’s scholarship programs and its athletic programs. The firm is proud to have supported Cristo Rey Sacramento in donating nearly $1M and hosting 134 students through work study programs since 2007.

In supporting this program, we watch freshman students from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds develop into fine young adults who are equipped to pursue their education formally or enter into the business community with the skills they need to do so. Many of our students go on to four-year universities. The firm has also hired a number of students after graduation to develop their careers in the legal field.

We are committed to devoting the necessary time and resources to support diversity and inclusion through hiring, mentoring and retaining diverse attorneys and professional staff. We value the importance of different impressions and life experiences and strive to provide all of our employees and potential future employees with everything they need to succeed.
